Arsene Wenger is preparing to sip into the transfer market this summer to search for fresh defensive reinforcements, especially if captain Thomas Vermaelen decides to move on from the Emirates.

And England Under-21 defender Dier is said to be on his radar after breaking into the Sporting first-team in the last two seasons.

Dier and his family moved to Lisbon when he was 10 years old after his mother was offered work in the city during Euro 2004 and they have lived there ever since.

However, according to reports in Portugal, he is preparing to return to the country of his birth after it emerged that Sporting were willing to part with him for just €6m – which is less than £5m.

And his availability, coupled with the knock down fee could be enough to tempt Wenger to part with the cash and snap him up during the summer transfer window.

Dier has made 30 appearances for the club since breaking into the first team during the 2012/13 season, and spent a short stint on loan at Everton, but didn’t feature for the Toffees during his time there.
