The BBC claim that Liverpool are set to sign Southampton forward Rickie Lambert.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers may well feel that the experienced England international could be the ideal back-up option to first choice starters Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez.

32 year old Liverpudlian Lambert has been a prolific goal-scorer during his five season spell at Southampton, helping the south-coast club from League One to the top half of the Premier League, scoring 117 goals in 235 appearances for the Saints.

His form led to a first national team cap last August and a spot in Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup finals squad and one imagines a move to play for his hometown club would be one that would certainly interest Lambert, especially following the departure of boss Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham earlier this month.

Rodgers may elect to make room for Lambert by offloading Fabio Borini and Iago Aspas, both of whom have failed to impress in a Liverpool shirt.
