Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has targeted the 29-year-old as the ideal replacement for the Manchester City bound Bacary Sagna, but has seemingly hit a brick wall in their pursuit as the champions are reluctant to let him go.

Juanfran has been in such good form for the La Liga outfit that Wenger had hoped to bring him on board, but Diego Simeone is aware that a number of his players are being lusted after across Europe and the Argentine is hoping to keep as many members of his squad together.

Arsenal may now be forced to go elsewhere in their search for a new right-back, and are also rumoured to be keen on Schalke’s Atsuto Uchida.

Wenger had also reportedly been interested in Toulouse defender Serge Aurier, but he apparently has reservations over whether the young Ivorian would be able to suitably replace the veteran Frenchman.

But Aurier could still find himself at the top of Wenger’s wish list as the club’s current situation sees Carl Jenkinson as their first choice right-back.
