The Belgian international centre-back has been tipped to make an exit this summer after spending the majority of the season on the bench or in the treatment room and a number of sides are all keeping tabs on him as the transfer window approaches.

The likes of Juventus, Roma and Inter Milan are all rumoured to be keeping a close eye on his situation, and will be boosted by the news that he would prefer a move to mainland Europe rather than stay in the Premier League.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger did use Vermaelen more towards the end of the season, though often only in the left-back position.

The 28-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract and would cost around £12m, with his wages likely to come up to £3m a year.

Vermaelen has made 150 appearances for the north London outfit during his five years in north London.
