Check in to Germany vs Portugal

Incoming Man United boss Louis van Gaal is hard at work drawing up summer transfer targets and has earmarked a move for German international Mats Hummels according to Football Direct News.

With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving Old Trafford there is clearly a real need to bring in fresh central defensive options, not least as both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones arguably perform better in right-back and defensive midfield roles, and van Gaal will look to tempt the Borussia Dortmund defender to the Premier League this summer.

Having seen his Westfalenstadion side fall further behind domestic rivals Bayern Munich the rock solid defender could be ready for a fresh challenge.

Van Gaal is also said to be closing in on a £25m deal to sign Atletico Madrid’s Joao Miranda with the Brazilian presumably seen as a potential partner for Hummels in a new-look Man United defence.

The 28 year old has had the standout season of his career in 2013/14, helping his Vicente Calderon side to a La Liga title as well as a Champions League final.

The no-nonsense centre-back could well be one of many players to leave Diego Simeone’s squad this summer with the likes of Diego Costa, Koke and Felipe Luis all likely to be the subject of interest when the transfer window re-opens.
