The 29 year old knows Redknapp well from his time at West Ham and Portsmouth and make fancy a return to the capital with Liverpool unwilling to meet his £120k a week wage demands.

Brendan Rodgers may feel that he can afford to allow Johnson to leave this summer as he can use hugely impressive youngster John Flanagan to replace the defender, with the 21 year old excelling last term at left-back.

The Liverpool manager has been linked with a number of potential left-back signings which would perhaps suggest he has already considered the option of using Flangan in his more suited spot which would leave Johnson surplus to requirements.

Johnson joined Liverpool in a £17.5m move back in June 2009 and has made 171 appearances for the club.
