Tottenham Hotspur could re-sign England international Steven Caulker from Cardiff City this summer, according to The Mirror.

The tall centre-back left White Hart Lane 12 months ago, as he was deemed surplus to requirements under then-boss Andre Villas-Boas.

Caulker, 22, earned rave reviews during his first season with the Bluebirds.

He started all 38 of Cardiff’s Premier League games, making 44 tackles, 47 interceptions and 327 clearances, as well as scoring five goals.

However, he was unable to save the club from relegation to the Championship.

After being a regular fixture in the top flight, Caulker is unlikely to be keen on dropping down a division. He may not have to either.

Spurs sold Caulker to Cardiff for £9m, but the North London club are yet to receive the full amount.

The Mirror suggest that Cardiff, who are in debt, could be willing to sell Caulker back to Spurs to avoid having the pay the rest of the transfer fee.

Tottenham, under new management, could well be interested in Caulker.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, recently recruited from Southampton, has a proven track record of working with young English talent and the chance to sign Caulker on the cheap may appeal to him.

Liverpool are also said to be tracking Caulker, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers keen to bolster his squad ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign.
