Liverpool Could Steal Arsenal Transfer Target From Under Gunners’ Noses

Arsenal were considered prime favourites to agree deal to sign World Cup star but Liverpool hope to bring him to Anfield.

Despite reports in the British press suggesting that Arsenal are close to agreeing a deal for Toulouse defender Serge Aurier, Liverpool are also in for the Cote d’Ivoire international according to Radio Monte Carlo.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with signing the 21 year-old in the wake of Bacary Sagna announcing he will leave Emirates Stadium at the end of June, but it appears Arsene Wenger has competition for his top target.

“There is no agreement with Arsenal or anyone. It was discussed in the past with Arsenal but it’s a moment they no longer exchange,” Aurier’s agent Stephane Courbis said in an interview with the Monaco broadcaster.

“I can tell you we are even discussing with another English club but there is really nothing official yet.”

RMC name that other English club to be Liverpool, who have Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan as options at right back but have been unable to agree terms on a new contract with the more senior man.

Johnson currently has twelve months remaining on his £120,000 per week contract at Anfield, and both the length of the any extension and his high wages are proving something of a sticking point with the Reds hierarchy.

Flanagan remains a great – albeit raw – prospect, and the attacking verve of Aurier could fit in well with Brendan Rodgers’ tactical gameplan.

The Ivorian managed six goals and six assists in Ligue 1, and was subsequently voted into the French top flight’s team of the season.
