In what will be one of more surprising managerial appointments this summer, one of Liverpool’s greatest defenders, and former Bayer Leverkusen manager Sami Hyypia could take charge at Brighton, reports Sky Sports.

The Seagulls are without a manager after Oscar Garcia resigned as boss at the end of the season, and are ambitiously targeting a move to appoint the former Finland international defender.

Hyypia starred for Liverpool between 1999 and 2009, winning the League Cup, the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League.

After retiring, he took charge of Bayer Leverkusen in 2012, and despite leading them to the Champions League after his first season in charge, he was sacked earlier this season.

Hyypia’s been without a club since April, and could be keen to test his mettle in the country he made his name as one of the best defenders in Europe.

If he got the job, he would hope to get Brighton into the Premier League at the first time of asking, after the side narrowly missed out last term after losing in the play-offs.

Southampton are also rumoured to be interested in his services as manager, however.
