The likes of Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Roman Weidenfeller are likely to grace the hallowed Anfield turf this summer.

That is because Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC have agreed to contest a high-profile pre-season friendly on Merseyside.

The eight-time champions of Germany will visit the Reds on Sunday August 10 – six days before the start of the 2014-15 Premier League campaign.

Liverpool are expected to begin their pre-season fixtures against Preston North End on July 19, before heading to the United States of America for games against AS Roma, Olympiakos, Manchester City and AC Milan.

It is almost 13 years since Liverpool last played Dortmund. The two sides met in the group phase of the Champions League in 2001.

Goals from Vladimir Smicer and Stephen Wright gave Liverpool a 2-0 win at Anfield, before the Reds secured a 0-0 draw in Germany six weeks later.

Dortmund, who reached the final of the Champions League in 2013, finished second in the Bundesliga this season, 19 points behind winners Bayern Munich.

The Westfalenstadion side are managed by Jurgen Klopp, who was strongly linked with the Manchester United manager’s job following the sacking of David Moyes in April.
