City boss Manuel Pellegrini is prepared to cough up the centre-back’s £36.5m release clause with the Portuguese giants in order to pair him with skipper Vincent Kompany.

However, the 23-year-old has expressed a reluctance to link up with the Eastlands outfit as he feels United and Chelsea are the bigger clubs.

He is not, though, thought to be high on Manchester United’s wish list and longer as incoming manager Louis Van Gaal is said to have reservations about the player’s temperament, which has come into question on numerous occasions this season.

Chelsea does seem to be a more realistic target as Jose Mourinho is a known fan of his and could be keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge depending on how he fares with his other transfer targets during the transfer window.

But with Saint Etienne starlet Kurt Zouma joining the club after the World Cup, space for Mangala in the Chelsea squad could be limited.
