Unsettled Newcastle United centre back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa looks likely to return to Ligue 1 after just eighteen months in England.

Marseille have emerged as the leading contender to sign Newcastle United flop Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who looks set to bring an underwhelming eighteen months at St. James’ Park to an end.

Yanga-Mbiwa joined the Magpies in a deal worth around £8.5 million from Montpellier, a figure that they are unlikely to recoup if the interest reported by French newspaper La Provence develops into a serious bid.

Despite having three caps for the French national team to his name, Yanga-Mbiwa has struggled to dislodge the likes of Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini from the Newcastle United first team.

With Alan Pardew unlikely to have a significant warchest at his disposal this summer, despite the early signing of Tenerife striker Ayoze Perez, it is probable that he will have to move players on before Mike Ashley allows Newcastle’s small squad to be strengthened. With Yanga-Mbiwa having struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League, a move could work well for all parties.
