Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan has cheekily left the possibility of a move to Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur on the table, despite claiming that he wants to stay at Benfica.

Nicolas Gaitain, the silky attacking midfielder from Portuguese side Benfica, has left the possibility of a move to the English Premier League hanging in the air.

According to the Daily Express, Gaitan has reiterated his desire to remain at the Stadium of Light, but admits that he said similar before leaving Boca Juniors for Lisbon in 2010.

He said: “The same thought that I had when I was at Boca Juniors is what I now think of Benfica.

“I do not want to leave. I’m not heading for the exit at Benfica.”

His decision to bring up the Boca Juniors u-turn seems to leave some space for negotiation, although potential suitors would be likely to have to make offers approaching the Argentinian’s £36 million release clause.

Premier League duo Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the two clubs that are seen as the most likely destinations for Gaitan, with new managers Louis van Gaal and Mauricio Pochettino both keen to inject new life into their squads.
