Southampton are among five clubs showing an interest in free agent Steve Sidwell, who is a free agent after leaving relegated Fulham, the Daily Mail reports.

The 31-year-old, who has also played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa in his career so far, was one of Fulham’s top performers in 2013/14, despite a campaign that ultimately ended in the club dropping down to the Championship for next year.

With Southampton seemingly facing an exodus of a number of key players in the midfield department, including Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama, Sidwell has emerged as one of their top targets to strengthen in that part of the pitch.

The player’s battling qualities and experience would no doubt make him a top signing for most Premier League clubs this summer, and he is also reported to be attracting interest from the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, Hull City and newly-promoted side Queens Park Rangers.

Southampton are currently without a manager following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur, but the club’s board are seemingly working on bringing in players alongside finding a replacement for the Argentine to take charge of the team next season.
