Cole, 32, was released by West Ham United at the end of the previous campaign as his contract expired and manager Sam Allardyce opted against offering him an extension.

The winger made 25 appearances for the Hammers last season, bagging three goals in the process, but many feel that his best days are now behind him.

However, Villa boss Paul Lambert has strived to add more experience to his squad and makes Cole his second signing of the week after landing the signature of Swiss international Philippe Senderos, who also arrived on a free transfer.

Lambert is also having to conduct his business to a tight budget as chairman Randy Lerner has put the club up for sale and is trying to limit the amount of money he spends while he searches for a new buyer.

Cole has over 500 Premier League appearances to his name as well as 56 England caps, which is all experience that was sorely missing from the Villa squad last season as the club scraped to a second successive 15th placed finish.
