Damien Duff has headed Down Under to sign a one-year contract with Melbourne City, after his contract with Fulham expired at the end of last season, reports the BBC.

Duff, who earned 100 caps for Republic of Ireland, has signed a one-year deal with the A-League side who are also set to field Spain international David Villa next season.

City coach John van’t Schip is thrilled to have the 35-year-old on board, saying: “We’re excited to have a player of Damien’s quality and experience.

“When we met with Damien, he was excited about the opportunity here. We believe he can offer international standard quality on the pitch.

“He will also be a great professional example for our younger players.”

The Irishman has made almost 600 professional appearances in English football and has won the Premier League on two occasions with Chelsea. He also appeared in the 2002 World Cup with Ireland which saw his side narrowly miss out on a quarter-final place.

Melbourne City were referred to as Melbourne Heart until this year when they were acquired by Manchester City. Now Manchester, Melbourne and New York City FC are all owned by the same people, suggesting the movement of players between the clubs will be regular. Villa has already agreed to join Melbourne on load from New York for the coming season.
