The Reds are already wary of Madrid’s presence looming on the horizon with a bid for star striker Luis Suarez, and the European champions are now looking to scupper one of Brendan Rodgers’ incomings now, too.

Liverpool had been one of five clubs to declare an interest in the 21-year-old striker alongside the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham, but where the others shifted their attentions Brendan Rodgers remained keen.

Volland impressed in the Bundesliga last term, bagging himself 12 goals and creating a further nine for his teammates.

However, it appears his domestic exploits have alerted Los Blancos to his presence with several reports in Germany claiming they plan to move for him to replace the outgoing Alvaro Morata.

Volland currently has a release clause installed in his contract that is set at £15m, meaning that there is still a very good chance that a deal can be reached to take him to Anfield, but that would largely depend on how much Madrid spend on their own transfer deals in the coming weeks.
