Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had the 20-year-old watched by a team of scouts during the recent Toulon tournament in France, where he played a staring role for the Brazil under-20 side.

And now reports coming out of the South American country are claiming that he is action on that initial interest by tabling an initial bid for the player that is thought to be in the region of £7m.

Caio, a technical centre-back, who can also play in midfield, was recently signed up by infamous football agent Jorge Mendes, who has been working hard on trying to secure him a move to Europe

Arsenal’s chief scout, Steve Rowley, has already held a meeting with Mendes, which apparently went very well, and now all parties are just waiting on the official word from the Brazilian club on whether a deal can be struck.

Wenger will then hope that he qualifies for a work permit before including him in the first team squad straight away.

Should the Gunners land Caio, it could pave the way for Thomas Vermaelen to join Manchester United, who were linked with making a move for the Belgian earlier this week.
