United to miss out on Dortmund star.

Check in to Germany vs Portugal

Manchester United look to have been dealt the blow of missing out on Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels after the Bundesliga club have failed to find a replacement for the player, according to the Daily Express.

The German centre-back is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in Europe at the moment, and has long been linked with both United and Barcelona, who are both in the market for new signings in that position this summer.

However, Dortmund are now extremely unlikely to let the 25-year-old leave the club as they look to have failed in a transfer pursuit of their own, with Freiburg announcing that they would not be selling youngster Matthias Ginter to the 2013 Champions League finalists.

Ginter, 20, has also been linked with Arsenal in recent times, but will continue his development at his current club for at least one more season, according to their chairman Fritz Keller, which in turn will see Dortmund keep hold of Hummels for the time being.

United may now step up their efforts to seal the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, who has also been mentioned as a top target, as they will be desperate to find someone to come in after both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand left Old Trafford at the end of the season.
