The 21-year-old star first joined the Gunners back in 2011, but has yet to play a single game for the club having been shipped out on loan for three consecutive seasons due to work permit issues.

He spent time with Lorient, Real Betis and, most recently, Olympiakos, where he has impressed with his goals and his all-round output, and his star turn against Uruguay at the weekend has given Wenger all the evidence he needs that the player is ready to take on the Premier League next term.

“He will definitely come back to us for pre-season,” Wenger who is over in Brazil on commentary duty for France television, said. “He is maturing well.”

Campbell also laid on an impressive pass to set up Costa Rica’s third goal in the unexpected victory, and will hope to be able to add something to Arsenal’s frontline, who were so desperate for more firepower last year.

After the game, Campbell said: “Today was excellent for me but it would have come to nothing without the contribution of my colleagues.

“Everyone lived up to their responsibilities. I tried to do my best to score goals and my colleague supported me.

“We have to take one step after another. We have difficult matches ahead but this will give us impetus.”
