African champions Nigeria got their 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign off to a frustrating start this evening after being held to a 0-0 draw by a limited but spirited Iran side in Curitiba.
This fixture saw the side who had scored the least goals in qualifying take on the team who had kept the most clean sheets, so the final result is perhaps not that surprising.
The best chance of the game fell to the Iranians, when Lille ‘keeper Vincent Enyeama had to react quickly to push away Reza Ghoochanejhad’s flicked header from a corner, whilst substitute Shola Ameobi saw a late effort for Nigeria cleared away from just in front of the goalline.
