Man United are pushing on with efforts to sign Atletico Madrid centre-back Joao Miranda according to the Daily Star.

The Old Trafford side will have to meet the 29 year old’s £24.2m release clause to have any chance of landing the Brazilian, though the Vicente Calderon man is said to be keen on leaving his La Liga title winning side after he failed to secure a spot in Felipe Scolari’s 2014 World Cup squad.

The rock solid defender may feel he needs a high-profile move to help his national team chances and Man United are ready to offer Miranda a massive pay-rise to help seal the deal.

Barcelona are also tracking the no-nonsense defender, who could be a solid defensive addition for Louis van Gaal to pursue this summer.

Van Gaal needs to fill the void left by the departures of both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and though Miranda is no spring chicken he is in the form of his life and is a player who could perhaps be open to a move to a Man United side who do not have Champions League football to offer in 2014/15.
