The 23-year-old has become widely regarded as one of the most solid defensive players in La Liga in recent times, with some fine performances in the 2013/14 season making him one of a number of the Basque club’s current stars being linked with moves to bigger teams.
Liverpool have also shown an interest in Martinez in the past, while Real are also reportedly set to face some competition from rivals Barcelona for his signature, though the Champions League winners currently look the favourites to win the race for his signature.
With the likes of Pepe and Raphael Varane struggling to convince manager Carlo Ancelotti with their performances this season, the Italian tactician is seeking a new recruit to become first choice alongside Sergio Ramos at the back, and Martinez looks a good candidate to come in in that position.
It could be a long summer ahead for Sociedad, who also face the prospect of losing key attacking duo Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela, both of whom have been linked with several clubs after becoming among the most impressive forward players in the Spanish top flight this year.
