Spain’s shock early exit from the World Cup following defeats to the Netherlands and Chile have apparently helped speed up the transfer as it is believed that the move was on hold until his involvement with the country’s defence of their title.

The £32m switch is now set to go through in the coming days, with Costa admitting he now considers himself to be a Chelsea player.

“It is clear that my future at Chelsea is more than Atletico Madrid,” he admitted after Spain’s tame 2-0 surrender to Chile at Rio’s iconic Maracana Stadium.

“Atletico has been my home, my life and I have a lot of affection for the club, but there are things in life that happen and you have to accept them.

“Now I’ll have to talk to my family because this year has been pretty good but hard in several aspects.

“Atletico has been my whole life, I think after all this time that I fought to have a space there I succeeded.

“I tried to do it the best way possible and thanks to them I was unable to get a place here and wear the shirt of Spain and represent this country.”
