Arsenal may now be in the driving seat to sign Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez this summer as Atletico Madrid have pulled out of a deal, according to Fichajes.net.

The Chilean international was one of the most impressive performers at the Nou Camp in the 2013/14 season, and has been linked with a whole host of top clubs this summer as it has become apparent that they may be willing to let him leave for the right price.

Spanish champions Atletico had emerged as contenders to snap him up as they eye new signings in attack to replace Chelsea-bound Diego Costa, but it seems as though they will not be able to afford the player, leaving his other admirers in a better position.

Although the Gunners have not always been known for splashing the cash on big-name signings, their £42.5m purchase of Mesut Ozil last summer looks to have marked the start of a change of approach in the transfer market.

The likes of Manchester United and Juventus have also been linked with the 25-year-old, but Arsenal may now fancy their chances of signing the skillful attacking midfielder, who can fill in a variety of roles upfront.

As well as impressing at this summer’s World Cup, Sanchez scored weighed in with 21 goals and 15 assists for his club this season.
