Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia according to the Metro.

The St James’ Park side are said to be in talks with Mexican side Pachuca as they chase the £7m ace, who has scored in both his country’s opening two World Cup fixtures.

The 25 year old is said to be keen on a summer transfer and a move to the Premier League would almost certainly tempt the forward.

The Magpies have been scouting the forward during the World Cup and Alan Pardew’s side could well do with an injection of quality up front, not least as they seem unlikely to make the temporary acquisition of Loic Remy a permanent one.

Newcastle United had little to offer up front in 2013/14 bar Remy, with the club’s next top-scoring striker coming in the form of Yoan Gouffran, who managed just six goals in 35 appearances.

One imagines that owner Mike Ashley may be amenable to funding a £7m bid for Valencia over the possibility of forking out a bigger sum for a more recognized goal-scoring outlet.
