Liverpool remain hopeful of winning the race to sign free agent Victor Valdes, who is set to be released by Barcelona, according to El Mundo Deportivo.

The experienced Spanish international has opted to not sign a new Nou Camp deal and will leave the Catalan club this summer with a number of sides said to be lining up contract offers for the 32 year old to consider.
Valdes is considered one of the best in the business but appears to be keen on a new challenge after 12 seasons in the Barcelona first team set-up and could perhaps be tempted by a move to the Premier League.
The Barcelona number one suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March which ruled him out of the World Cup finals but is seemingly still very much a Brendan Rodgers target.
Liverpool had a few issues at the back last term and though Simon Mignolet started the season well he struggled in the final months of the campaign and Valdes is arguably a far superior custodian.
