Barcelona have submitted a £68 million offer for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, according to reports in the German media.

The Catalans look set to rival the long-standing interest of European Champions Real Madrid, and could spark a record-breaking bidding war over the 27-year-old star, who netted 31 goals in 37 appearances for the Reds last season.

Madrid paid out over £85m to take Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur last summer – breaking the world record transfer fee they paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. If the Uruguayan is to make the move to Spain this year, Liverpool will surely hold out for another record breaking sum.

Barcelona are desperate for reinforcements this summer, having failed to win a trophy last season, and already let Cesc Fabregas depart for Chelsea. The prospect of a frontline that includes Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi would certainly be enough to scare most defences, should any potential deal become a reality.

Suarez is currently playing  a starring role in his country’s World Cup campaign. After missing the defeat to Costa Rica through injury, he returned in devastating fashion to score both his team’s goals in the 2-1 victory over England, a result which left Roy Hodgson’s side all but out of the tournament.

The striker is reportedly happy at Liverpool, and does have Champions League football to look forward to next season, after helping the Reds finish second in last year’s Premier League. But he could yet be tempted by a move to either Madrid or Barcelona, if either team are prepared to meet the huge asking price.
