The 18 year old will pocket £100k a week and will be the highest paid youngster at the club but now Louis van Gaal’s side must up their offer to Southampton if they want to welcome in the England international.

Man United offered £27m before the World Cup but that bid was turned down and as yet no fresh bid has been forthcoming which may well lead some to believe that chief executive Ed Woodward is reticent about meeting the south-coast side’s reported £30m valuation.

Van Gaal is ready to retain veteran Patrice Evra for another season, with his current deal set to expire, though his back-up Alexander Buttner is set to leave and one wonders if the Dutch coach will order Man United to pay an extra £3m to seal the deal for the promising wide-man.

£30m would be a large fee to invest in Shaw, who has the potential to be a big star, and no doubt Southampton are keen to learn from the lessons of their sale of Gareth Bale to Tottenham, a move they agreed in 2007 that saw them pocket a total of £12m only to see the White Hart Lane side then sell the winger to Real Madrid for around £85m six years later.
