Having been linked with an interest in Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno for much of the summer it appears that Rodgers may opt instead to make a big money offer for Brazilian international Marcelo, though one wonders just how likely it is that the 26 year old would seek to leave the Bernabeu this summer.

Liverpool will fight Tottenham in pursuit of Marcelo, who has spent eight seasons in the Spanish capital and has successfully fought off Fabio Coentrao for the starting spot under Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti did start the Champions League final with Coentrao though Marcelo came on as a sub and scored against Atletico Madrid and has played well during the World Cup finals, albeit netting an own goal in the opening match against Croatia.

A move for Marcelo would not come cheap, with this source citing a £26m valuation for the former Fluminense man.

Rodgers saw his first choice left-back Jose Enrique miss most of last season through injury though youngster John Flanagan did an excellent job in an unfamiliar role, with the England man likely to switch to his more favoured right-back role in 2014/15.
