The 24 year old Athletic Bilbao man looks likely to be incoming boss Louis van Gaal’s first signing as Old Trafford boss and will cost the club £28.7m, the sum needed to trigger his release clause.
Herrera, who is yet to earn a senior Spanish cap, will sign a four year deal that will earn him £2.3m a year and will hope that the high-profile switch aids his push for recognition from Vicente del Bosque.
Van Gaal was no doubt keen to freshen up his brittle midfield and Herrera’s arrival may well lead to the likes of Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and even Marouane Fellaini concerned for the respective futures at Man United.
Herrera has spent three years at San Mames and played a key role in helping the Basque side to secure a Champions League berth for next season and has made 94 La Liga appearances for Athletic Bilbao.
