Manchester United are refusing to pay over the odds for teenage Southampton and England star Luke Shaw, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 18-year-old, who played 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Costa Rica at the World Cup, has been the subject of a summer-long transfer saga linking him with a big-money switch to Old Trafford.

Southampton are keen to get the best possible price for the London-born left-back, who has four years left to run on his current contract at St Mary’s.

United have already had one bid of £25m rejected by the Saints and it was reported earlier this week that the Red Devils had increased their offer to £34m.

However, the M.E.N understand that this is untrue and that United are refusing to bow to Southampton’s seemingly excessive demands.

Right now, Patrice Evra is the only recognised first-team left-back at Old Trafford, following Alex Buttner’s move to Dinamo Moscow.

Evra, 33, was one of United’s better players last season, in which he started 33 Premier League games – two starts fewer than Shaw made at Southampton.

The former France captain recently signed a new 12-month contract with the 20-times champions of England.
