Reports in Portugal suggest that Premier League champions Manchester City are close to wrapping up a £12m deal for Porto midfielder Fernando, reports the Daily Mail.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side nearly wrapped up a deal for the 26-year-old anchorman in January, but now seem like they’ve concluded a deal with Portuguese club FC Porto for his services.

Fernando had signed a long-term contract extension in February, but this has not stopped City chasing the man who has yet to win a cap for the Brazilian national side.

Fernando prides himself on his battling qualities in the middle of the park. He’s tenacious, and is nicknamed ‘The Octopus’ because of his ability to intercept opposition possession.

At City next term, he will likely be used as backup to current Brazilian anchorman Fernandinho, and strengthen the bench options at Pellegrini’s disposal – with Javi Garcia the regular rotation choice at the moment.

If a deal is concluded as expected, he’d be the Sky Blues first signing of the summer ahead of their pursuit to retain the Premier League and win the Champions League in 2014/15.

The player himself will no doubt be celebrating the move to the mega rich Mancunians this evening, as he turned 26 only today!
