Manchester United Make €36m Transfer Bid: Louis Van Gaal Wants Spanish Midfielder

New Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal attempts to land first Old Trafford signing.

Athletic Bilbao have confirmed on their official website that they have turned down a bid of €36 million (approximately £28.8m) from Manchester United for their midfielder Ander Herrera.

“Athletic Club wishes to report that this week it rejected an offer from Manchester United FC, estimated at €36 million euros, to transfer the registration and economic rights of the player Ander Herrera,” read a club statement.

The Spaniard was the subject of one of the most engrossing transfer sagas of last summer, with a group of lawyers claiming to represent Manchester United attempting to force through a deal in the final hours of the window before the Red Devils revealed that the party was not affiliated with them.

The deal then fell through.

The 24 year-old put that and a difficult start to the season behind him to focus on a big season for Athletic Bilbao.

Herrera managed five goals and five assists in his 33 appearances for his club in La Liga, and that end product in attack coupled with his combative approach in the middle of the park suggests he could develop into a superb all round midfielder.

However, Athletic Bilbao are more than aware of his current ability and considerable potential, and new Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal will have to up his offer if he is to land his first signing.
