Bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester United are set to fight it out for the signing of Ghanaian international forward Andre Ayew from Ligue 1 side Marseille, according to reports from the Daily Star.

Explosive forward Ayew found the back of the net twice for the Black Stars at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but was unable to prevent Kwesi Appiah’s side from crashing out in the group stage after a 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

His performances on the biggest stage, however, are sure to have attracted admirers – and both United and Liverpool are on the look out for improved wide attacking options this summer.

The 24 year-old has become a firm favourite at the Stade Velorome since emerging from the youth system in the Southern French city, bagging 34 Ligue 1 goals whilst operating from a largely wide role.

Having cut his teeth with loan spells at Lorient and Arles-Avignon, Ayew has firmly established himself as one of the most impressive attacking talents in the French top flight.

Liverpool have been at the centre of a number of transfer sagas this summer, with Adam Lallana’s protracted move from Southampton now appearing to finally be gathering some real traction.

Ayew offers a different option, however, as a more pacy and direct footballer who offers a genuine goal threat.

United, meanwhile, have been busy in the transfer market already this week, signing Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera for a combined fee in excess of £60 million, but new manager Louis van Gaal is believed to have more to spend in a bid to refresh his underachieving squad.
