Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been offering his advice to new manager Louis van Gaal, suggesting that United should move to sign French international and Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane, according to the Daily Express.

Varane, who is currently at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Didier Deschamps’ France side, is rated as one of the most impressive young defenders in the world and it would be some coup if United were able to prise him away from the clutches of Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Ferdinand is not the only admirer of Varane on these shores, however, with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reportedly having pursued the signing of Varane after labeling him as the world’s finest young defender.

The 21 year-old, who arrived at the Bernabue from French side RC Lens in 2011, is highly rated by Ancelotti and his staff in the Spanish capital and they are unlikely to consider letting him leave unless an eye-watering fee was offered by a potential Premier League suitor.

Despite this, Ferdinand believes that Varane would be the ideal man to begin helping United to replace himself and Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford, both of whom left the club on free transfers this summer after long spells as first choice defenders at the club.
