Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe was so desperate to take a free-kick for new side Toronto FC, that he almost ended up fighting his own teammate, 25-year-old Brazilian forward, Gilberto.

However, as this extraordinary video shows, Defoe was all smiles after Gilberto smashed the set piece into the net to score his first ever MLS goal.

Defoe left Tottenham at the start of this year, and has enjoyed a successful start to his career with the Canadian-based franchise, who are currently coached by Defoe’s fellow  former Spurs player Ryan Nelsen. Defoe did however miss out on a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad this summer, despite netting 19 international goals, including three during the preceding qualification campaign.
