Van Gaal wants to add some much needed steel to his Man United midfield and has set his sights on experienced enforcer Nigel de Jong, this regardless of his previous affiliation to local rivals Man City.

The 29 year old has been in solid form since moving to AC Milan two years ago but could be tempted by a move back to the English top tier.

Man United do not possess an out and out defensive midfielder and a move for de Jong could leave Marouane Fellaini free to fill a more attacking role that better suits his attributes.

Van Gaal is also keen on strengthening a defence that has lost the services of veteran pair Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and will look to bring in Feyenoord youngster Stefan de Vrij, though this source’s valuation of £20m does seem a tad steep.
