Real Madrid have slapped a price tag of £40 million on star winger Angel Di Maria, according to reports from the Daily Express, perhaps in an attempt to deter bidders from the Premier League.
Arsenal and Manchester United had been linked with the Argentinian international, who was integral to Real’s comeback victory in the final of the Champions League against Atletico Madrid in May.
Despite not being as eye-catching as teammates Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, Di Maria’s combination of work rate, power, pace and ability makes him one of La Liga’s most difficult wingers to deal with, and a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s set-up at the Bernabeu.
Such a high price is likely to deter both Arsenal and United, with the former having more pressing concerns when it comes to rejuvenating their squad and the latter likely to be looking for more cost-effective deals after splashing huge sums on Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw within the last seven days.
Di Maria is currently at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he is often used as a central midfielder by Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella, merely underlying his versatility and ability to become an indispensable member of any team.
For the time being, at least, it looks as though that team will continue to be Real Madrid.
