Brendan Rodgers is set to continue his big summer of spending this week as he aims to add £25 million rated Chelsea target Lazar Markovic to his title chasing squad.

The Daily Express are reporting that the Reds will move for the 20-year-old Benfica winger, in addition to the deals already in place for Southampton pair Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, Lille and Belgium striker Divock Origi and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can. Rodgers will also continue his chase for Bayern Munich wide man Xherdan Shaqiri as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in four different competitions next season.

Markovic is a versatile winger known for his incredible turn of pace and eye for goal. He was described by former Inter Milan manager Andrea Stramaccioni as: “a player with exceptional qualities and impressive acceleration.”

He joined Benfica last season from Partizan Belgrade, where he scored 13 league goals in 46 first-team appearances. He netted another seven times for the Portuguese champions last season, as they narrowly missed out on the Europa League title. The Serbian has already been capped 12 times by his country, scoring two goals.

In addition, he was twice voted into the Serbian Pro League team of the season, and was part of the Europa League squad of the season during his debut campaign with Benfica. He was however, suspended from the final of the competition, after an altercation with Mirko Vucinic during a foul-tempered semi-final with Juventus.
