France take on Nigeria in today’s Last 16 game at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The French were in emphatic form in the group stage, dispatching Honduras 3-0 and Switzerland 5-2, before resting several of their star players during the 0-0 draw with Ecuador.

Didier Deschamps’ side will be heavy favourites to advance, with Les Bleus having reached the World Cup Final on the last two occasions they progressed beyond the group stage – in 2006 and 1998.

France could be without centre-back pair Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) and Laurent Koscielny (achilles) which means that Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala could get the nod alongside Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

Nigeria have never progressed beyond the second round of a World Cup, and will be looking to become only the fourth African side to reach the quarter final stage – after Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010).

The Super Eagles progressed from their group with four points, gained via an uninspiring 0-0 draw with Iran and a 1-0 victory over Bosnia. However, they showed that they can go head-to-head with the best teams in the tournament during a narrow 3-2 defeat by Argentina.

Their coach, Stephen Keshi, will be without midfielder Michael Babatunde following his freak arm injury sustained against the Argentine’s. Chelsea’s Victor Moses, who has made just one World Cup appearance so far due to a muscular problem, also remains a doubt.

This is the first time in World Cup history that Africa has had two teams in the second round, with the winners of this match set to face either Germany or Algeria in the quarter-finals.
