Though Liverpool may see star performer Luis Suarez exit this summer it appears that the Anfield side have set their sights on another Uruguayan if reports in TuttoMercato are to be believed.

Brendan Rodgers has apparently taken an interest in tough tackling right-back Maxi Pereira as he looks to boost his defensive contingent.

The 30 year old has spent the last seven years with Portuguese giants Benfica and helped the Lisbon based side to a Primeira Liga title last term so it would perhaps be a surprise if the no-nonsense defender considered a possible summer move to Merseyside.

Whilst Liverpool had no problem finding the back of the net last term they struggled at the back and Glen Johnson was a hugely inconsistent performer and the England man has just a year to run on his current deal so one can see why Rodgers would consider possible additions though Pereira is clearly not a signing that fits the Northern Irishman’s youthful transfer policy.

Arguably Rodgers can also turn to youngster John Flanagan to replace Johnson, the 21 year old having impressed as a makeshift left-back last season, but perhaps the Liverpool manager feels he could do with an injection of more experience at the back and Pereira has plenty of top level expertise and may well be a cost effective option to consider.
