The Old Trafford side have been linked with an interest in the 22 year old Sporting Lisbon bruiser for some months and will look to bring in the player for less than his reported £37m release clause.
AS Monaco and Chelsea are also pursuing Carvalho and are said to have tabled offers of £27m for his services.
Having already signed Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao it appears that Man United boss Louis van Gaal still believes his midfield options can be further improved and Carvalho would offer the Dutchman an out and out defensive midfield presence which at present they do not posssess.
Carvalho had a standout campaign last term, helping his side to secure a runners-up spot in Primeira Liga before forcing his way into Paulo Bento’s World Cup squad.
The powerful midfielder could offer some bite to a Man United midfield that last term attempted to use Belgian Marouane Fellaini in a holding role that simply did not suit the former Everton man.
Louis van Gaal looks set to be handed significant funds to improve a squad that could only muster a seventh place finish under former boss David Moyes.
