City were initially interested in the Chilean international last summer and were preparing a move for him before Shakhtar Donetsk star Fernandinho became available.

However, this summer they were counted out of the race after manager Manuel Pellegrini hinted that his side would only be making three big signings, and with a host of other clubs all interested in Vidal they were thought to be looking elsewhere.

Manchester United and Real Madrid were the frontrunners for his signature, but it now appears that they have competition in the form of City and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Both sides are said to have been impressed by Vidal’s form at the World Cup, despite not being fully fit after a knee operation before the tournament.

Chile cruelly crashed out of the tournament to hosts Brazil on Saturday on penalties.
