The club’s website has confirmed the Blues have met the 25 year old’s release clause which the BBC reports was triggered with a bid of £32m.

Jose Mourinho had been keen to freshen up his attacking options after the collective failure of the likes of Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres to consistently provide a goal-scoring edge last season.

Costa netted 36 goals in all competitions last term, the last of which came away at Stamford Bridge as his Atletico Madrid side knocked out Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals.

Diego Simeone will be loathed to lose the former Real Valladolid marksman, who played a pivotal role in his side’s surprise La Liga title triumph whilst also scoring regularly in their run to the Champions League final.

Costa becomes Chelsea’s second signing of the summer with Mourinho having already secured a deal to bring in Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas whilst Brazilian David Luiz was sold to PSG.
