Arsenal are readying a club record bid for Colombian attacker James Rodriguez after Arsene Wenger received the all clear to make a mammoth offer for the hugely talented AS Monaco youngster.

CaughtOffside understands that Gunners boss Wenger has been tracking the 22 year old for some months and will look to lure the former FC Porto man to the Emirates Stadium and seek to play him in a supporting striker role to help strengthen his Arsenal attack.

Wenger has been pursuing a number of targets to fill such a role with the likes of German pair Julian Draxler and Marco Reus, of Schalke and Borussia Dortmund respectively, being on the Arsenal manager’s radar but the Premier League side will now concentrate their efforts on Rodriguez.

AS Monaco’s decision to axe Claudio Ranieri may leave a number of the club’s top performers considering their futures, with Radamel Falcao also said to be strongly linked with a Stade Louis II exit, and a big money offer for Rodriguez may be accepted as the principality side seeks to adhere to UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines.

Wenger is ready to use a significant portion of his reported £100m transfer war-chest to land Rodriguez and his connections with AS Monaco, who were managed by the Arsenal man from 1987 to 1994, could assist in his pursuit of the flair player.

Arsenal will offer €60m (£47m) for Rodriguez, who cost AS Monaco €45m (£35m), and are ready to table a £180k a week contract which may be amenable to the Ligue 1 star with Wenger looking to make an offer that comes close to matching the player’s current tax free status.

That offer would break the club’s current transfer record, set last summer, when Arsenal paid £42.5m for Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil.

Rodriguez proved a massive hit in Portugal, helping FC Porto to three successive Primeira Liga titles before moving to AS Monaco where in his debut season he notched up ten goals and finished the season as the leading assist maker in Ligue 1.

That form continued into the World Cup finals where Rodriguez has scored five goals in four matches to help Colombia reach a quarter final where they will take on Brazil.

There are no shortage of interested parties and as such Arsenal are keen to put in an early competitive offer for the AS Monaco star and Arsene Wenger is said to be confident of his chances of landing the star performer.
