Man United are set to complete their third signing of the summer with a deal to bring in Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen nearing completion according to the Daily Star.

Having already signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton respectively, Louis van Gaal will look to further strengthen his defence with a move for 28 year old Belgian Vermaelen.

The former Ajax man has become a bit-part player at the Emirates Stadium with Arsene Wenger opting to use Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his first choice central defensive pairing and preferring Kieran Gibb at left-back.

Man United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Vermaelen and have seen an opening bid turned down by the north London club, who want £12m for the experienced defender.

Vermaelen moved to Arsenal in a £10m deal back in the summer of 2009 and was made club captain following Robin Van Persie’s move to Old Trafford.

The adaptable defender has made 150 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 15 goals.

Louis van Gaal will be keen to fill the void left by the departures of veteran pair Rio Ferdinana and Nemanja Vidic and may feel Vermaelen the right man for the job.
