Arsenal’s summer transfer dealings are set to be struck a huge blow, with the Daily Star claiming that prime target Arturo Vidal would prefer a move to Manchester United.

Incoming United manager Louis van Gaal is eager to make a quick start to life at Old Trafford, as he aims to guide the club to an improvement on the seventh place finish they registered under David Moyes.

The Dutchman has already added Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Southampton full-back Luke Shaw to his squad, and is looking to make further additions.

Vidal, the Chilean playmaker who enjoyed an excellent season as he helped Juventus win their 30th Sere A title, has been a target for Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Monaco, as well as Manchester United, but the 27-year-old would prefer a move to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is prepared to offer the World Cup star a £250k-per-week contract to force through the £48 million move, which would leave Arsenal still looking for a midfield maestro to add to their squad.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger rejected the chance to re-sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona this summer, with the Spaniard instead joining Chelsea. Arsenal have also been linked with moves for forwards Alexis Sanchez, Mario Mandzukic and Mario Balotelli amongst others, but the Emirates faithful have so far been left frustrated.
