Liverpool will retain the services of Fabio Borini this summer, according to the player’s agent.

The 23-year-old striker joined the Reds for a fee in the region of £10.5m when he signed from Roma two years ago, but his Anfield career has yet to get off the ground.

He has scored just two goals in 20 first-team appearances for the Merseyside giants.

Borini, a one-time Italy international, spent last season on loan at Sunderland, netting 10 times in 40 games for the Black Cats.

Liverpool frontmen Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez were in lethal form last term, scoring 33 and 21 Premier League goals respectively.

When former Southampton forward Rickie Lambert joined Sturridge and Suarez on the Liverpool roster last month, it looked like Borini may find it difficult to force his way into the plans of manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, Suarez has since been ruled out until the end of October, having been banned by FIFA for biting Giorgio Chiellini.

The disgraced Uruguayan could be on his way out of Liverpool anyway, having been linked with a possible summer move to Barcelona.

With Liverpool preparing to compete in the Champions League for the first time in five seasons, Rodgers will need at least three strikers at his disposal.

Borini’s agent, Marco De Marchi, expects his client to remain at Anfield.

De Marchi told Calcionews24: “Fabio goes back to Liverpool to stay there, as stated by the manager Rodgers a few weeks ago.

“So far, Liverpool have not received any communication regarding his transfer.

“I would not be surprised if there were other clubs who want him, because I consider him a complete striker.

“But for the moment, all I can say with certainty is that Fabio has returned to Liverpool to stay.”
