After a summer of speculation surrounding his future, former Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole is set to agree a surprise switch to Serie A runners-up AS Roma, according to reports from the Express.

The Italian side finished second in the league last season, leading for much of the early part of the season before being gunned down by eventual champions Juventus.

Their defence was, however, superb – conceding just 25 goals in 38 games, a record that they will be hoping to better if a deal for Cole can be secured.

There was some controversy when the former England full back, who has a century of caps for his country, was left out of the squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup by manager Roy Hodgson, in favour of teenager Luke Shaw.

Cole has enjoyed a long and successful career in the Premier League, initially with Arsenal before making the move across London in a part-exchange deal involving centre back William Gallas.

He quickly found his feet and was first choice at Stamford Bridge until Spaniard Cesar Azplicueta was favoured by Jose Mourinho mid-way through the 2013/14 season.

He has been linked with the likes of AS Monaco, Liverpool and even a move to MLS this summer, but it now looks as though a career swansong in the Italian capital is in order for the experienced Cole.
